Measuring Success: Recreation Goals and Boardgame Interventions

As a recreational therapist I translate leisure interest into clinical goals: increased social participation, improved self-efficacy, and community inclusion.

Board games and TTRPGs are excellent vehicles for those aims — they’re measurable (attendance, turns taken), meaningful (shared stories), and sustainable (clubs, conventions).

Meta-reviews and scoping studies highlight benefits of board games and TTRPGs for psychosocial functioning when programs are structured and evaluated.

Select outcome measures aligned to the teen’s life: number of new peer contacts, minutes of unprompted conversation, and engagement outside of sessions (Discord messages, shared hobby projects).

Use popular games from BoardGameGeek as interest anchors — teens are more motivated when they’re playing what their peers are talking about.

Digital platforms help scale programs, letting rural or mobility-limited teens join consistent groups.

Evidence from digital gaming literature shows online play can reduce loneliness and support social networks when moderated and goal-oriented.

For funders: package hobby outcomes alongside therapy metrics (quality of life scales, participation indices) to show how games translate into clinically meaningful change.

That’s how hobbying becomes long-term wellbeing work.

Ask us about how we can build a social circle in a lifelong hobby for you or the person in your care regardless of age or ability. If we can’t personally deliver a program for you, we will refer you to someone who can regardless of location in Australia.
