Osteoporosis & Gentle Strategy Gaming

With age comes increased risk of Osteoporosis, fractures and reduced mobility.

Diversional therapy emphasises safe, accessible recreation that promotes cognitive engagement and social connection (which in turn supports compliance and mood).

Board games and online gaming circles fit beautifully.

For older adults with osteoporosis, choose seated game formats: strategy games like Carcassonne, Azul, or narrative role-play systems where the focus is storytelling not movement.

Use online platforms for remote participation when outings are risky.

Encourage a weekly game time followed by gentle stretching or discussion about “what’s next in our hobby”.

The built social routine helps build consistency.

Studies show that board games enhance cognitive function, socialisation and quality of life in older adults.

The value of routine (“game night every Wednesday afternoon”) cannot be overstated — routine supports bone-health habits like regular gentle exercise, medication adherence and vitamin D/Calcium routines.

In therapy we set goals: attend game circle weekly, initiate two peer chat-turns per session, and plan a hobby action (learn a new game) per month.

By focusing on “safe, social, seated strategy play”, we provide a meaningful recreational program that complements the medical management of osteoporosis and supports overall wellbeing.

Ask us about how we can build a social circle in a lifelong hobby for you or the person in your care regardless of age or ability. If we can’t personally deliver a program for you, we will refer you to someone who can regardless of location in Australia.
