Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) can be highly beneficial for homeschooled children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The structured yet imaginative nature of D&D provides a safe and engaging platform for these children to develop social skills, enhance communication, and practice problem-solving in a controlled environment.
Under the guidance of a therapeutic game master (like myself) who understands Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), the game can be tailored to address specific social and emotional challenges, fostering teamwork, empathy, and resilience – all in a light-hearted, low-demand, autonomous evironment.
Additionally, the interactive storytelling aspect of D&D can stimulate creativity and help in building confidence, all while ensuring that the children are supported and understood in their unique needs.
These sessions that I run with AV are not therapy sessions – they are solely aimed at engaging with hard-to-reach kids and giving them a safe and trusted place to interact in.
AV can supply invoices that can then be passed onto your plan manager or directly to NDIS.
Finally, some testimonials about my programs:
“Hi Michael, (redacted)’s mum here, just a short note to say thank you… you are the first person (redacted) has engaged well with in a very long time. I am grateful and keen to see if you run other groups/activities/support in the future. (redacted) is looking forward to jumping online tomorrow night.”
“”Your (school can’t DND program with Asperger’s Victoria) was a lifeline for my child last year. It was a really tough time for them, they found they couldn’t face school but each week they were really excited about your DND group and it gave them something to look forward to. We’ve now switched schools and my child is doing a lot better. Thank you so much.””
“It’s so much fun, you get to meet other nice people who are fans of DND too. I’ve learnt so much about DND, this group is definitely the highlight of my week!”
“I can’t thank AV for their DND program enough. It has totally changed my sons life. It has supported him to cultivate DND into a real passion, bringing him so much excitement and joy, having positive impact on so many areas of his life”.
