When an older adult is living with Parkinson’s disease, movement, coordination and social isolation can be real challenges.

Parkinson’s Disease: Movement, Strategy & Social Play

As diversional therapists we see that recreational game-play can help with purposeful movement (fine motor, gross motor), cognitive strategy, and social engagement.

Online gaming can also include adapted controllers or accessible interfaces for people with tremor or bradykinesia.

Start with strategy board games that require thoughtful planning but minimal frantic speed: games like Azul or Sagrada (which are popular on BoardGameGeek) can be great because they emphasise pattern recognition rather than rapid reaction.

Pair that with cooperative games like Pandemic or a light war-game scenario where the person directs strategy and commentary while a partner handles the more physical tasks.

Online platforms can help carers join remotely when transport or mobility is limited.

Research into serious games in older adults shows digital and board-game hybrids improve coordination, reaction time and mood.

In therapy terms, schedule a weekly “strategy & chat” hour, alternate between physical-adapted tasks (picking up large dice, using card holders) and purely cognitive play, and schedule a social wrap-up where the group shares something achieved that week beyond the game.

One real program example: the “This is Me” board-game developed for older adults, including those with cognitive and movement challenges, to support identity and social interaction.

By emphasising connection over competition and using online tools when needed, we support inclusion and meaning.

Ask us about how we can build a social circle in a lifelong hobby for you or the person in your care regardless of age or ability. If we can’t personally deliver a program for you, we will refer you to someone who can regardless of location in Australia.
